With a solar hot water heating system many Irish homes can generate enough solar energy to heat 70% of their hot water and the pay back period for a solar heating systems is usually 8 - 12 years on a home system. When sunlight strikes the solar panel the light is absorbed into the panel and the solar heating system converts that thermal energy into heat. This heats up the heat transfer fluid in the copper heat transfer pipe. When the temperature in the solar panel is higher than the temperature in your hot water cylinder a digital controller in the heating system activates the pump. The heat transfer fluid in the heat pipe pumps heat into your cylinder that heats up the water. Solar panels can also be installed for domestic and commercial buildings to generate electicity as well as for water heating. Photovoltaics, or PV for short, is a solar power technology that uses solar cells or solar photovoltaic arrays to convert energy from the sun into electricity.
